Explorers will embark on a journey to locations near and far. Starting at home in the Pacific Northwest, artists will create maps and other representations of this places that we call home. Then, as the semester continues, we will travel near and far to discover how artists from different cultures and times use the visual arts elements to communicate their observations, ideas, and beliefs, and create useable objects for everyday living. From ancient civilizations to modern-day visionaries, we’ll explore the rich tapestry of human creativity and draw inspiration from the diverse cultures, places and artworks we encounter.
We’ll try out all sorts of arts media and techniques painting, printmaking, drawing, sculpting, and making cool collages.
So, grab your paintbrushes and let’s set sail on this amazing art adventure together. Get ready to unleash your imagination and make some awesome art!

All the spheres – atmosphere, biosphere, lithosphere and hydrosphere. We come in contact with them everyday and they impact life here on earth. Come explore the ins and outs of the spheres and how they connect to each other and how we interact with them. Hands on experiments, scientific observations, and projects will help students understand concepts. Students will maintain a scientific notebook and will have daily writing and drawing tasks.

Ink and Clay: Exploring ‘A Single Shard’ Through Literature and Visual Arts

Embark on a captivating journey across continents and back in time to explore the art, geography and history of 12th Century Korea in this integrated ELA and VA class inspired by the novel, A Single Shard by Linda Sue Parks.
By translating text descriptions into visual representations, students will strengthen reading comprehension, develop drawing skills and cultivate their creativity. Exploring the history and geography of 12th Century Korea, will offer students valuable insights into the cultural backdrop that shapes the narrative of “A Single Shard” and the extraordinary artwork of that period. Students will synthesize their learning in personal blogs, where they will share their insights, reflections, and artistic creations with their peers, fostering a collaborative learning community and extending the reach of their exploration beyond the confines of the classroom. From creating pottery inspired by the protagonist’s journey to crafting visual interpretations of key scenes, this interdisciplinary course offers a dynamic fusion of deep reading, and artistic expression. In this class, we will read fiction and non-fiction about food. We will also be sharpening our writing skills in essay writing. We are going to read and write about food and all underpinnings that go with it: culture, preparation, nutrition, eating habits, and comfort. Each unit will include a fiction center piece to devour with non-fiction side dishes to feed our hearts and minds. Each unit end with a themed class buffet inspired by the readings but prepared by the student.

Know Your Place – Fully Enrolled

Building on 3rd and 4th grade math, this class will continue the discussion of place value in our base 10 math system. Students will get comfortable building numbers in base 10 and doing the 4 operations, addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, with multi-digit numbers. Students will work through problems as a class, in small groups and independently. We will also use manipulatives, real world examples, and projects to help us understand math concepts.

Let’s put on a play!

In this drama class for 6-8 grade students, we will explore different forms of performance from monologues to improvisation to producing a play. Students will be encouraged to act up and get silly and sometimes serious. Students with no or little experience and those with lots of experience will find something for them in the class. We will perform a play at the end of the semester.

The following Lab Classes are designed for students who are below grade level in these subjects.
Students do not sign up for the classes, but are assigned Lab Classes through Counselor/Teacher recommendation. USE THIS REQUEST FORM to be considered for Lab classes. Talk to your counselor if you think your student should be taking a lab class.
PLEASE NOTE:
- Students remain in the lab class until skill mastery is achieved and could be exited from the class prior to the end of the term. For this reason, students need to have another certificated class on their schedules (including students new to Cascade).
- Lab classes DO count as one of your 5 (full time)/3 (part time) classes, take attendance, and provide monthly progress. But, you must still maintain another certificated class on your student’s schedule.
- These classes will maintain a waitlist if full. As students exit, other students can join mid- term from the waitlist or as requested if there is space.
Reading Lab Section A

Students will be taught phonics, phonemic awareness, high frequency words and reading strategies at their individual reading level in small groups. Welcome to “The Magic of Spelling and Cursive Instruction”! Say goodbye to rote memorization and hello to the enchantment of the English language and penmanship! Our curriculum takes a sequential, language-based approach to spelling, bolstering both reading and writing proficiency. Through cursive writing instruction, students not only enhance their writing fluency but also fortify their grasp on language learning. Instead of memorizing word lists, students delve into the sounds and patterns and rules that compose words, making spelling, reading, and writing a breeze. Our research-backed curriculum guides students through a journey of learning to write and read letters, words, and sentences in cursive. From mastering high-frequency words to understanding sound-letter correspondences and English language rules, students engage in sound, analytical practices that instill confidence in their spelling abilities. This class is designed to diagnose and support lagging skills in writing. Writing is a complex interworking of several different domains and if a student has any issue with any one of those domains, it can make the writing process laborious or antagonistic. In this class, we will work to make writing a positive process while supporting all skills so students can access writing for communication and learning at need.

Artistic Alchemy: Unleashing Creativity through Book Art – Fully Enrolled

Each book will offer a vehicle for exploration of diverse visual arts media. Students will discover their unique creative voice while honing technical skills in multiple visual arts media and developing knowledge of the Visual Arts Elements and Principles of Design. Students will develop their own nations and combine their learning from the semester into one World’s Fair simulation at the end of the semester.

Bring your story to life by making stop motion animated movies! Working in teams, we will build sets and characters using LEGO® bricks, clay, and other materials, then write, direct, and edit unique stories. We will learn about narrative structure, setting the tone, and using special effects to communicate stories to an audience. By the end of the session, kids will complete multiple animation exercises and a final film project to share with the world!

Students will receive specially designed instruction to help them improve their reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills. Through group collaboration, projects, games, discussions and activities students will strengthen reading fluency, comprehension, writing stamina, spelling, vocabulary and typing skills tailored to your student’s individual needs.

Designed specifically for middle school students with IEP Math goals, our small group setting allows for specially designed instruction focused on building math confidence and asking questions. We will cover a wide range of math topics, including number sense, operations, algebraic thinking, geometry, and strengthening core concepts and applied real world problems. Students will have fun playing math games and feel prepared by practicing a variety of strategies and building their understanding of math tools.
This session is designed to accompany Lily’s 6-8 We Be Mathin’ class on Mon/Wed/Fri 9:30 – 10:25. Students who sign up for this support session should enroll in the math class too.

Dungeon Master Academy

Learn to be a Dungeon Master and forge your own adventure! In this inclusive class about creative storytelling, kids won’t just be playing D&D as an adventurer, they will build magical worlds, draw amazing maps, and weave fantastic stories. Students will use craft materials to bring their campaigns to life, practice improv techniques, and learn the rules of D&D so that they can lead their own adventures. Then, working in groups, we will create characters and take turns running games for each other. At the end of the course, kids will take home custom adventure kits to share with friends and family!

This small group Learning Skills group is for students with Reading and/or Written Language IEP goals. Specially designed instruction will focus on building essential reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills, all while fostering a love for language and literature. We will explore various literary genres, engage in fun hands-on activities, games, and multimedia resources. Students will be encouraged to take risks and learn how to express their thoughts and ideas. This group aims to improve reading fluency, developed critical thinking abilities, strengthen writing skills and build confidence and independence.

Video Game Design – Fully Enrolled

Design and build your very own video game! New and exciting changes to the Fall curriculum make this class great for new and returning students. Each day, students will receive a short lesson, followed by guided creative building time. Lessons focus on designing fun and challenging platformer levels. This is not a programming-focused class, but students will have the opportunity to customize their games using block-based programming similar to Scratch. At the end of the course, students will have a game they can play and share with friends and family!
Prerequisites: Students must have basic computer skills: be able to save and load files, switch between programs and type on the computer.

We create unique opportunities for students to construct fun and exciting projects while empowering them to become independent thinkers-building confidence, self-esteem, and a repertoire of practical skills that last them a lifetime. At the end of the session, each student will go home with wooden toys that they have made and painted by hand.
This class for our middle school students will take on more complicated projects as is appropriate for this age group. Students will have the opportunity to modify or develop their own projects with teacher input on a case by case basis.
Electives serve students only within the grade band. Not HCC/AL eligible.

This group is for early elementary students to get extra support to further develop their literacy skills in a small nurturing environment. Created for students in K-1st with Reading or Written Language goals on their IEP. Specially designed instruction will focus on goal areas, strengthening phonics, sight words, vocabulary, writing practice and story telling through games, activities and promoting teamwork. We know this small group will have so much fun while practicing and building their skills.

Sessions will cover a wide range of topics including addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, geometry and more by using real-life examples and relatable scenarios. In this course, we will focus on building a strong foundation in key math concepts, ensuring that each student feels confident and capable in their mathematical abilities. Through interactive activities, games, and hands-on exercises, we aim to make learning math a fun and enjoyable experience for everyone to foster a positive math attitude. Students will learn the basics of how to tune their guitar, how to read and play simplified chords, and how to read and play single string tab. Students will learn familiar, old, and current songs. As students progress, they may be introduced to the CAGED chord system, more challenging tab, and more challenging songs. Students may also explore songs of their choice. Regular practice is required for success and students will be encouraged to perform for family members and the class.
